Analysis of the Opening and Closing Scene (Trainspotting)
In the opening sequence Renton is running from the authorities after stealing goods from a shop, this sets the scene as the audience begins to make assumptions of Renton and the kind of person he is, towards the end of the opening scene the camera pans around "Mother Superiors" place which then confirms the assumptions as Renton is falling over after taking a "hit" of Heroin. "Mother Superiors" place is ver dim and has almost a green colour to it this has connotations of illness and sickness. As well as this we see the baby that is a prominent feature in the film and she juxtaposes the drug house as she's full of life, bright and optimistic.
In contrast the closing scene shows Renton reflected twice which emphasises the fact he's looking in on life and is looking at the reflection of the person he used to be. Also the song in the first scene is "lust for life" by Iggy Pop which is a punk classic and punk has connotations of pessimism, hopelessness and rebellion, whereas the song in the closing scene is a rave classic of the 1990's by Underworld which has a high beat and a positive tone which is very representative of Rentons new mindset. The director of Trainspotting, Danny Boyle, used music as a way of showing the chronology of the film. He explained that the use of Iggy Pop resembles the group as just being washed up punks as the punk era would have died out years before, henceforth the use of rave music and scenes as artists such as underworld came into prominence and then Brit Pop artists such as Blur were used who came into fashion in the 90's which also emphasises the coming of age.
The voiceover in the opening sequence is said in a very ironic and sarcastic way, as Renton says "choose life, choose a job, choose family, choose a big f****** television...". He says this in an ironic way because he thinks it's boring and the norm and all he cares about is heroin and getting a "hit". In the closing scene he exclaims similar things but in a serious, optimistic way making it believable and it makes the audiences assumptions at the start completely juxtaposed.
